Coulthard wins in Monaco |
26 May 2002 David Coulthard won a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix for McLaren after resisting intense pressure from Michael Schumacher throughout the final third of the race. The Ferrari was rarely more than a second behind Coulthard for the last 25 laps, but the Scot kept his cool to take McLaren's first victory of 2002.
Ralf Schumacher joined his brother on the podium after taking a distant third place for Williams. Jarno Trulli finished fourth to score his first points of the season for Renault, with Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella fifth. Meanwhile Arrows driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen held off Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello to take sixth.
Coulthard made an excellent start from second on the grid to get the jump on polesitter Juan Pablo Montoya into the first corner. Michael and Ralf Schumacher followed them and the top four proceeded to pull away from Trulli in fifth.
For the first third of the race there was little between them. Then on lap 31 smoke started to puff from the rear of Coulthard's McLaren. However, the team used telemetry to solve the problem (with an oil transfer tank) and the Scot started to pull way from Montoya. |
